With so many different bugs crawling around in Brooklyn, you may not be sure which ones are cockroaches - especially since you probably don't want to get too close. While the exact size and shape of cockroaches ranges by species, these bugs generally have an ovular brown or black body with long antennae and six legs. The three most common cockroaches seen in New York are American roaches, German roaches, and oriental roaches (also known as waterbugs).
American cockroaches are the largest roach species found in Brooklyn. These pests grow to 2 inches long and can be distinguished by their reddish brown color. When you think "cockroach," you're probably picturing an American cockroach. It's also worth noting that American roaches have wings and are more likely to be seen flying than other roach species.
German cockroaches are tiny compared to their American cousins, only growing to about half an inch long. Although they also tend to be brown, they're typically a paler brown without a reddish tint. German roaches do have wings, they almost never use them.
Oriental cockroaches - or waterbugs - are distinct from other local roach species in Brooklyn because they are black in color and don't have wings. Waterbugs may be mistaken for crickets, but grow much larger. They're intermediate in size between American and German cockroaches, usually growing to about an inch or a little more.
