What Attracts Wasps to Homes in Brooklyn?

Wasps will build their nests just about anywhere, including under eaves and inside of walls. Any home in Brooklyn can become the foundation of a wasp nest, but some homes are at higher risk of an infestation than others. Factors which commonly attract wasps to local homes include:

  • Food - Wasps are omnivores that sometimes hunt other insects but will just as happily feed on everything from flower nectar to rotting garbage. Depriving wasps of an easy food source will reduce the risk of a wasp infestation in your home in Brooklyn. Make sure all outdoor garbage bins are lidded so that wasps can't swarm on the table scraps you dispose of. Be mindful when planting flowers, too; wasps are drawn to brightly colored flowers, particularly those that are yellow.
  • Water - Wasps need to drink water just like we do, so any sources of standing water on your property can become wasp attractants. If you have a fountain, birdbath or pond outside your home in Brooklyn, you're more likely to experience a wasp infestation. Avoid leaving out buckets or anything else that can collect water to keep wasps from being enticed.
  • Nest Building Sites - One of the main reasons that wasp infestations are so common for Brooklyn homes is that our buildings provide ample nesting opportunities. Depending on the species, wasps may build a visible papery nest hanging down from any outcrop on your home such as eaves, ledges or decks, or they may nest inside of your walls or attic. Monitor the exterior of your home for signs that wasps have started to build a nest; if you see wasps flying in and out of a crevice in your siding, it's very likely there's a nest hidden within.
